THE X FILES: FIGHT THE FUTURE (1998) - TRAILER ANALYSIS
The trailer begins with a man at a bar ordering shots, he looks down and is speaking to the bartender. He says he is a key figure in an ongoing charade, the plot to conceal the existence of extra terrestrials. The immediately shows that the genre is is going to have an extra terrestrial/supernatural element to it. The bartender thinks he has had too much to drink and doesn't believe him. This shows that the bartender and most people do not believe in the supernatural.
A woman says 'I can't tell you what killed this man, and i don't think anybody else can claim to either'. This shows that the detectives are battling something they have never dealt with before. Even though the trailer shows that it is in the crime genre as they are detectives, it does not conform to the conventions of a normal crime thriller as they are dealing with the government and the extra terrestrial, so it is a very different case to what a crime thriller would normally have. Some of the iconography that conforms to the police crime genre is the suits that the detectives are wearing, guns, FBI jackets and police cars. The music is eerie at the beginning and then picks up pace and is quite dramatic. As the trailer goes on it speeds up and gets louder and hits its climax and then the music stops and a man says 'trust no one Mr Mullen'. This leave the audience one the edge of their seats and wanting to know what happens and who not to trust. At the beginning of the trailer is all starts off quite slow, but picks up pace quite quickly and we learn more information on what is going on however, the trailer does not give too much away on what happens in the film. We know that something bad has happened or something went wrong as there is an explosion and the police car flips and the snow capsizes and the ground beneath them begins to drop.
